first first day of school

October 8th, 2008 by clunis

It would be easy to get sentimental and misty-eyed about dropping Nora off for her first day of baby school (and the gray, rainy weather sure doesn’t diminish that urge), but I think I’ll try to follow Nora’s lead here and just be ecstatic that she has a fun, safe place to play with a whole world of new toys and seven other babies.

These were taken when I dropped her off this morning. I put her down and she immediately scooted away to play with the cars.

I stopped by again after teaching and meeting with some students and she was joyously trying to go the wrong way up the slide on the climbing gym. That’s my girl. :)

Update: She napped! These amazing people somehow managed to convince Nora to take a nap. I’ve asked if they’re available to come spend the night.

i thought nora was an awesome sleeper? have you been having napping angst?

She has a lot of trouble napping in places that aren’t her crib. Montana was extremely rough. Los Angeles was far worse. We’d anticipated weeks of zombie baby coming home from baby school before she’d get the hang of sleeping in this odd, new place.

does she nap in car, stroller, mei tai? also, Z totally napped at school, too. Eric had to wake her up, even, so I could come get her. We’ll see how it goes next Wednesday, but color me VERY surprised… and pleased! Also, she was asleep tonight before 9. So yah, school seems to be having a positive effect on sleep. Whoot!

congrats to Z on successful in-school nappage!

Nora will sleep in the car, stroller, or carrier but wakes up as soon as you stop moving. She’s even been known to wake up in the car *as* we pull into our driveway.

I should also admit that Nora’s early promise as a stellar sleeper has not proven to be predictive of future results. She always gets up at least once each night and will often get up twice (like when she’s sick). Jen is physically incapable of sleeping through this; so even if Nora settles herself (it happens often enough), Jen still gets an interrupted night’s sleep.

Sounds like our experience. We can hardly get Harper to nap for more than 20 or 30 minutes at a time at home, but she regularly gets 1-2 hour naps at day care. And she used to be great at sleeping through the night but now we’re lucky to get one night a week.

heh. Z only sleeps through the night if she’s already in our bed… otherwise she has to wake up at least once so she can come get into bed with us. Then she’s out like a light (though admittedly a light that kicks and squirms for a bit, while still asleep :) She has slept through the night (bedtime til 6 or 7am) in her own bed less than 10 times in her life. We’re thinking of getting her a full size bed, and when she comes to our bed we get up and go sleep in her room… think it’ll work? :) Part of the problem is that she often creeps in and doesn’t wake either of us so we don’t even know she’s there… Ah, 3 year olds :) (How was day 2 of school?)
